The importance of good patient communication

Communication is a critical piece of our everyday lives. It is the way we pass on our thoughts, emotions, feelings, and perspective to other individuals.

Communication is considerably more involved than the way most individuals see it. There are many reasons and purposes for communication and there are various approaches to communicate.

“Understanding the different Verbal and Nonverbal Communication aspects of verbal and non-verbal communication, and the important roles they play in our interactions with others, is the first step to enhancing positive communication and nurturing relationships” (Lucas, 2015). In the health care field, legitimate nonverbal communication is important while dealing with patients and their families. The smallest sign that a nurse or doctor might be uninterested in what a patient is saying can be traumatic.

Patients will have a better outcome and outlook when leaving the doctor’s office or hospital knowing that the health care professional listened and understood them and when the patient understand the doctor as well. It is the same for communication between coworkers. In the event that one does not demonstrate that they are interested in the discussion, other workers may not consider the other to be reliable.
